Nor'easters kick Mules for first win of the season

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Rookie guard Carrie Bunnell '11 (Barnet, Vt.) poured in a game-high 20 points, as the University of New England Nor'easters earned their first win of the season with 74-52 victory over Colby College Monday evening in a non-conference game played at the Augusta Civic Center.

The win halts a three-game losing streak for the Nor'easters (1-3), while Colby falls to 1-2.  It was the first meeting between the in-state opponents since the 2002 season.

Bunnell came off the bench to score her game-high 20 points in just 24 minutes of floor time.  She was 8 of 15 from the floor, including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

The Nor'easters shot an impressive 53.1 percent (17 of 32) from the floor in the first half to open up a 43-21 advantage.  They were never really threatened the rest of the way.

Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, N.H.) had 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals for UNE.  Sara Pelkey '09 (Barre, Vt.) tallied a season-high 16 points, while Marissa Hesketh '08 (Tolland, Conn.) contributed 10 points and five assists.

The Nor'easters utilized excellent ball movement to dissect Colby, registering 25 assists on their 30 field goals.  Point guard Alli Gamache '09 (Dudley, Mass.) dished out a game-high six.  UNE also held a 42-31 advantage on the glass.

Julianne Kowalski '11 (Montville, N.J.) finished with 12 points and five rebounds for Colby (1-2). Alison Cappelloni '10 (Sudbury, Mass.) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Meredith Aronson '11 (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had 10 points and five assists.

The Nor'easters return to action Thursday when they head to Lasell College for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
