BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The nationally-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears placed four players in double figures on their way to a 91-64 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
Bowdoin--ranked 11th in the nation by d3hoops.com--raised its record to 2-1, while the Nor'easters remain winless at 0-3.
The Polar Bears scored the opening six points of the game and went on to lead from start-to-finish. Bowdoin made half of its field goal attempts in the first half to double-up the Nor'easters (46-23).
The hosts would come out and score two buckets right away in the second half and cruise the rest of the way. The Polar Bears shot 49.3 percent (33 of 67) from the floor on the evening, including converting 10 of 22 three-point field goal tries.
Leah Rubega '10 (Norwich, Conn.) recorded game highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds to pace the winners. She was 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line.
Katie Bergeron '11 (Bradley, Maine) finished with 16 points, while Leah Weiss '11 (Dover, Colo.) and Alexa Kaubris '09 (Rumford, Maine) scored 13 apiece. Weiss was perfect from the field (5-for-5).
Sara Pelkey '09 (Barre, Vt.) tallied 12 points to lead the way for UNE. Marissa Hesketh '08 (Tolland, Conn.) had 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting and Katie Diggins '10 (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in 10 points.
Bowdoin held a commanding 48-30 rebounding advantage and forced 20 UNE turnovers.
The Polar Bears return to the hardwood Nov. 27 when they play a road game at national-power University of Southern Maine.
The Nor'easters will be seeking their first win next Monday (Nov. 26) when they head to the Augusta Civic Center to take on Colby College. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
