Jackson stars as Williams holds off Nor'easters

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Forward Chessie Jackson '11 (Goleta, Calif.) had 25 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to power the Williams College Ephs to an 84-74 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in the consolation round of the Babson College Invitational Tournament presented by Irving Oil.

The Ephs even their record at 1-1, while the Nor'easters fall to 0-2 after losing to host Babson College Saturday in an opening-round game.

Jackson was all over the court in the first half, scoring 16 points and collaring five boards.  She scored eight points over the opening 5:41 to help propel Williams to a 17-4 advantage.

The Ephs would continue to gradually build their lead late in the half and took their largest lead (40-19) of the game with 2:45 remaining.  UNE closed the frame strong to pull within 14 (44-30).

The two teams would go back-and-forth early in the second before the Nor'easters came storming back behind Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) '09 and Annie Foster '09 (Oxford, Maine). 

The duo combined for 27 points in the second stanza to get UNE back in the game.  The Nor'easters pulled to within two (71-69) on a bucket by Kylie Bragdon '11 (Winter Harbor, Maine) with 4:10 on the clock.

Williams would respond with a 6-0 run to ice the contest.  Jackson started the spurt with a basket, then rejected a shot on UNE's next possession.  She was 10-for-15 from the floor for the game, including 2 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Taylor Shea '11 (Allendale, N.J.) contributed 14 points and seven boards to the win, while Mika Peterman '09 (Los Altos, Calif.) added 13 points and seven assists.

The Ephs overcame 28 turnovers by gaining a 48-38 rebounding margin with their size advantage.  Williams has seven players on its roster listed at 6'0" or taller.

Gamache had four 3-pointers in the second half on her way to a team-high 18 points.  She added five assists and three steals and was selected to the all-tournament team.  Foster finished with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting.

Carrie Bunnell '11 (Barnet, Vt.) and Bragdon offered strong performances for the second consecutive game.  Bunnell nailed three treys and finished with 13 points.  Bragdon scored six points and hauled down nine boards.

The Nor'easters, who shot just 51.6 percent (16 of 31) from the line, will face nationally-ranked Bowdoin College for a road contest Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
