Cassie Zdrojeski (above) tallied her first collegiate goal in a 3-1 loss to Curry
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Brooke DeLuca '10 (Duxbury, Mass.) scored twice in the second half to give Curry College a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon.
The Colonels--unbeaten in their last three outings--improve to 8-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference matches. UNE falls to 3-9, 3-6 in TCCC play.
After the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first half, DeLuca gave Curry a one-goal advantage in the 61st minute when she lobbed a high shot over UNE goalkeeper Leigh Engel '10 (Richmondville, N.Y.), who had come off her line.
DeLuca added an insurance goal in the 77th minute to cap a strong second half, both for herself, as well as Curry. The Colonels held an 18-6 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes, and it was only several spectacular saves by Engel that kept the Nor'easters in striking range.
The visitors would get on the scoreboard first at the 19:05 mark as Ashley Hansbury '10 (Chelmsford, Mass.) found the back of the net, assisted by Mandy Hibbard '09 (Chelmsford, Mass.).
UNE drew even in the 33rd mniute when Paige Franco '11 (Hooksett, N.H.) set up Cassie Zdrojeski '11 (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) for her first collegiate goal.
Danielle Denham '08 (Framingham, Mass.) recorded five saves for Curry, which hosts Regis College on Saturday.
Engel finished with 13 saves for the Nor'easters before giving way to Beth Ehmann '11 (Ludlow, Vt.) in the closing minutes.
UNE will look to snap its three-game losing streak Thursday when it travels to Boston for a TCCC match versus Wentworth Institute of Technology.
