BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Forwards Lisa Baillargeon '08 (Berlin, N.H.) and Nicole Mace '09 (Readfield, Maine) had a hand in all four University of New England goals as the Nor'easters downed Nichols College, 4-1, Monday afternoon in The Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey play.
UNE snaps a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in conference matches. The Bison fall to 9-3 overall, 3-2 in TCCC play.
The Nor'easters would benefit from a strong start, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 2:44. Lauren Broderick '11 (Longmeadow, Mass.) knocked home his first collegiate goal off a feed from Mace to open the scoring 1:06 in. UNE made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when Baillargeon rushed up the right side and found Mace, who pushed the ball into the back of the cage.
Nichols would cut the deficit in half at the 18:39 mark as Sara Bailey '10 (Athol, Mass.) tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Bison trailed 2-1 at the half despite holding a 12-6 advantage in shots and 9-4 lead in penalty corners.
UNE put the match away with a pair of goals early in the second frame. Mace tipped in a drive by Baillargeon for her second score of the match and team-leading seventh of the year. Baillargeon capped the scoring at 47:33, tipping home a drive by Briana Youland '11 (Turner, Maine).
Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, Mass.) made nine saves for the Nor'easters, who play a key TCCC road match Saturday at New England College.
For Nichols, which plays at Worcester State College Wednesday, MaryKate Bednarz '10 (Springfield, Mass.) had seven stops.
