WESTFIELD, Mass. - Led by the impressive performances of Matt Veiga '11 (Lynn, Mass.) and Josh Havelin '11 (Seneca Falls, N.Y.), the University of New England men's cross country team placed seventh in the deep field of the James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State College at Stanley Park on Saturday afternoon.
Veiga placed 29th (28:10) and Havelin 34th (28:30), as the Nor'easters totaled a score of 261. The event featured some of the strongest NCAA III teams in New England competing over an 8,000-meter course.
Josh Grenier '11 (Augusta, Maine), Sam Powell '08 (China, Maine) and Dan Kelleher '11 (Norton, Mass.) each finished in the top 90 competitors to round out UNE's scorers.
Matt Anderson of event winner Trinity College was the top individual. He circled the course in a time of 26:36--a 5:21 per mile pace.
The Nor'easters return to action next Saturday at the State of Maine Championship to be held at Pineland Farms in Gray.
