WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College defender Kristen Helgesen '08 (Manchester, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season just 38 seconds into the second overtime as the Fighting Scots defeated University of New England, 2-1, today in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play at the Brigham Athletic Complex in Wenham.
The Fighting Scots (7-6, 4-0 TCCC) fell behind, 1-0, in the first half as UNE (3-7, 2-3) midfielder Amy Williams '08 (Bridgewater, N.H.) found the back of the cage on an unassisted goal with 16:46 to play in the half.
Less than four minutes into the second half, GC forward Abby Walker '09 (Portland, Maine) notched the equalizer on an assist from junior midfielder Sarah Orlando (Lafayette Hill, Pa.)
UNE goalkeeper Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, Mass.) helped keep the match tied, stopping 15 shots in regulation and keeping the Scots at bay.
Just over a minute into the first overtime, UNE defender Anne Cowles '10 (Franconia, N.H.) put a pair of shots on goal which Scots keeper Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y.) turned away to keep the game alive. GC would earn four penalty corners in the first OT but failed to convert and the teams were still even at 1-1 through 85:00.
With just 38 ticks of the clock elapsed in the second overtime, Fighting Scots midfielder Veronica Pierce '11 (West Hartford, Conn.) broke away from the defense and sent a pass to Helgesen for the finish and 2-1 win for the home team.
The Scots ripped off 29 shots in the contest including 19 on goal as Nelson finished with 17 saves in the tough loss. Wilson records the win as she turned aside nine shots. GC owned the possession game throughout, holding a 15-3 advantage on penalty corners.
The Fighting Scots remain undefeated in the CCC and will look to remain so as they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on Western New England College at 4:00 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 8); the Nor'easters will look to end a five-game skid as they battle Nichols at home the same day.
