Bailey's goal pushes Bison into TCCC Semifinals

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sara Bailey '10 (Athol, Mass.) scored with 5:45 remaining in double overtime to lift fifth-seeded Nichols College past fourth-seeded University of New England, 1-0, in first-round action of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Bison improve to 14-5 overall with the win, and will travel to top-seeded Gordon College on Wednesday for the semifinal match.  The Nor'easters conclude their season with a record of 5-11.

At the end of regulation, Nichols held a 23-9 advantage in shots.  Goalie Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, Mass.) stopped all 16 shots she faced, and Heather Laferriere '09 (Veazie, Maine) came up with a pair of key defensive saves to keep the Nor'easters in the game.

Both teams had quality scoring chances in the first and second overtimes.  In the second, Bailey gained possession after a scramble in front of the UNE goal and put home the game-winner.

MaryKate Bednarz '10 (Springfield, Mass.) made four saves for the winners.
