Golden Bears Get By UNE on Own Goal

UNE's hopes of advancing in the postseason ended Saturday against WNEC

WNEC wins TCCC Quarterfinal, 1-0; to play Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England College took advantage of an own goal for a 1-0 victory over upset-minded University of New England in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27).

The Golden Bears were credited with the goal when freshman Kienan Garn (Lake Huntington, NY) directed a cross in the direction of junior Dale Totman (Conway, Mass.) that was inadvertently headed into the Nor'easters' net by a UNE defender in the 59th minute.

WNEC out-shot the visitors by a 12-4 margin in winning its seventh one-goal decision of the season. Senior goalkeeper Steve Hennessey (Essex Junction, Vt.) made two saves for the Golden Bears.

Sophomore keeper Derek Poulin (Scarborough, Maine) had a solid outing stopping seven shots.

University of New England ends its season with a 6-10-1 record.

Western New England College (12-5-2) will host fifth-seeded Colby-Sawyer (10-7-2) in a semifinal round match of TCCC Tournament on Tuesday (Oct. 30).
