UNE inches closer to tourney bid

PAXTON, Mass. -- Amy Williams '08 (Bridgewater, N.H.) had a goal and an assist as the University of New England edged Anna Maria College, 2-1, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The win vaults the Nor'easters (5-9, 4-4 TCCC) into fourth place in the TCCC standings and concludes their regular-season conference slate.  They await the fate of Endicott College, Nichols College and Salve Regina University--all of whom finish their regular season Wednesday.

Williams set up Lisa Baillargeon '08 (Berlin, N.H.) at the 22:29 mark to get UNE on the scoreboard.  Williams would double the Nor'easters' lead with 1:41 remaining in the half, notching an unassisted score.

Anna Maria responded less than a minute later when Angela Guiffrida knocked home a Tina Oliveri pass to cut the deficit in half with 44 ticks left in the opening stanza.

The Amcats (2-12, 1-6 TCCC) pressed to score the tying goal in the second half, but UNE goalie Ayla Nelson '11 (Auburn, Mass.) would make three of her five saves to preserve the victory.

The Nor'easters wrap up their regular season Wednesday when they host Bridgewater State College under the lights at 6:00 p.m.
