Amanda Smith (above) scored both early, and late, in the second half in UNE's 2-0 win
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Amanda Smith '08 (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a pair of second-half goals to snap a scoreless tie and give the University of New England Nor'easters a 2-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference soccer victory over Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon.
Winless in their previous four matches, the Nor'easters improve to 4-9-1 overall and 4-6-1 in conference play. The Amcats fall to 3-10-2 overall, 1-8-2 in TCCC matches.
Despite out-shooting Anna Maria 11-0 in the opening half, the Nor'easters were unable to find the back of the net and had to settle for a scoreless tie heading into the break.
That would change in the opening stages (48:11) of the second frame when Cassie Zdrojeski '11 (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) crossed the ball from the right flank to an open Smith, who booted a shot to the upper right-hand portion of the goal.
The hosts would add an insurance goal in the 84th minute. Kristin Meza '11 (San Diego, Calif.) broke in and drilled a hard shot towards the net. Anna Maria keeper Karine Almeida '09 (Brockton, Mass.) knocked the ball down, but Smith swooped in to collect the rebound and deposit the ball into the back of the net for her third score in two matches, tying her with Stacie Desmarais for fifth place on UNE's career goal-scoring list.
Goalkeeper Leigh Engel '10 (Richmondville, N.Y.) was credited with her second shutout for the Nor'easters, who held a 22-2 margin in shots.
Almeida made several outstanding saves in the second half to keep Anna Maria close. She finished with seven stops.
UNE travels to New London, N.H. on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m.TCCC match at Colby-Sawyer College. The Amcats host Wentworth Institute of Technology (3:00 p.m.) that same afternoon.
