CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of New England scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and three more in the 3rd to defeat Washington University (Mo.) in softball action Thursday morning (Mar. 16) at the Dot Richardson Spring Games hosted by the U.S. National Training Center.
Winners of three in-a-row, the Nor'easters (4-3) took advantage of four miscues by the Bears (6-4), who saw their four-game unbeaten streak put to a halt.
Three of those errors came in the UNE portion of the initial frame, as Big Blue answered an unearned run for WashU to take the lead.
The Bears shifted in front (3-2) during the top of the 3rd, when an RBI-triple from Taylor Arends was followed soon after by a sacrifice fly.
An error started the last half of the stanza, and with one away,
Caroline Schoenbucher tied things up on a single that scored
Avery Alberghini for a second time.
Samantha Dreissig then plated Schoenbucher with a double, before Dreissig touched home for a second time off a hit by
Andrea Gosper.
Arends had an RBI-single in the 5th, following a lead-off triple by Amy Walsh, to provide the final margin.
Katelyn Austin picked up the win in the circle for UNE, with four strikeouts against eight hits and a pair of walks.
Arends went 3-for-4 in the game, and Walsh tallied two hits and scored three times. Maggie Clapp took the loss in three-plus innings of work, and Anna McKee stuck out six against no hits and three walks the rest of the way.
