UNE celebrates 10th Hall of Fame Ceremony

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England hosted its 10th Anniversary Varsity Club Hall of Fame Ceremony on Friday (Sept. 19) at the Harold Alfond Forum. The Class of 2014 included: Everick Shackelford '90, Wendy Atwood '98 and Ashley MacDonald '08.

Shackelford, a transfer from New Hampshire Vocational Technical Institute, scored 1,262 points in just two seasons in a UNE basketball uniform. He averaged 20.4 points per game over his career while totaling 287 assists and 256 steals. Shackelford shot 78.2 percent (215 of 275) from the free throw line for his career and holds the single-season record for three-point percentage, making 46.6 percent (62-for-133) of his attempts during the 1988-89 season. He was a two-time all-NAIA District 5 selection and an all-state pick.

Atwood is one of the most decorated players in women's basketball history. Currently, she stands third all-time with 1,720 points, sixth with 327 assists and tied for fifth with 230 steals. Atwood was a four-time all-conference selection and voted Maine Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year for the 1996-97 season. On the softball field Atwood posted a .410 career batting average over three seasons. She is fourth all-time in that category and third with a .494 career on-base percentage. Atwood was an all-conference and all-state selection in that sport, as well.

Despite missing one season due to injury, MacDonald put together a career that has her name all over the Nor'easters' lacrosse record book. In 52 games she totaled 170 goals, 79 assists and 249 points -- good for second all-time in each category. She holds the program mark for points in a single season (86 in 2005), and notched 10 or more points in a game four times during her career, including 12 in a contest March 18, 2008 versus Saint Joseph's College to share the single-game record. MacDonald was a three-time all-Commonwealth Coast Conference selection.
