CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Jordan D'Aurio put a two-out double down the line in left to score a pair in the bottom of the 6th, sending Nichols College on its way to a 5-3 victory over the University of New England on Sunday morning (Mar. 16) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.
The Bison trailed 3-0 after the UNE got on the board in the top of the 4th. Big Blue started the inning with hits from senior
Amanda Vaudreuil, junior
Adrienne Chase, and sophomore
Kelly Murphy, and following an infield error and a flyout, sophomore
Jess Lemos singled to plate a second run. Another infield error allowed a third run to score, but two outs at home plate on the ensuing play brought an end to the threat.
Nichols made it 3-2 in the last half of the 4th, getting two infield singles and a sacrifice bunt before Meghan Sears placed a single in right field to bring in both baserunners.
After D'Aurio swung the advantage to the Bison with her bat in the 6th, she scored on an error that followed.
With two outs in the 7th, the Nor'easters managed to get Vaudreuil and Chase aboard at the corners, but could not extend the contest.
Haley Fountain went the distance for Nichols (2-3), giving up 10 hits and no walks.
Vaudreuil, Chase, and Lemos finished with two hits apiece for UNE (1-2). First-year
Katelyn Austin took the loss in the circle, striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings against five hits and four walks.
