Huskies get first win, top Nor'easters 69-51

GORHAM, Maine -- Four players in double figures helped the University of Southern Maine to a 69-51 victory over the University of New England on Wednesday night (Nov. 19) in men's basketball action at Hill Gymnasium.

The win is the first of the young season for the Huskies (1-2), while the Nor'easters drop back to 1-2.

Sean Caddigan led the hosts with 11 points. Zach Leel posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jacob Littlefield and Aaron Toman combined for 20 points and 14 boards.

Big Blue received 11 points off the bench from Drew Coveney, with Sam Thomas and Evrim Ozkan going for nine and eight, respectively.

Southern Maine knocked down nearly half of its three-point attempts (12-of-26) to overcome 27 turnovers. The Huskies also finished with a 43-29 advantage on the glass.

UNE struggled to find the range all game, connecting at just a 30 percent (16-for-53) clip in the contest.

A 10-0 start for USM turned into an 18-point cushion (23-5) that was better just before halftime (34-15).

The Nor'easters strung together seven straight points to get within 11 (36-25) early in the 2nd half, but the gap was pushed to 23 (51-28) by the 11:28 mark.

Big Blue returns to the court on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) for a date with Bowdoin College.
