Rams edge UNE in penalty kicks for ECAC crown

Box Score

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- After playing to a 0-0 draw through two overtime periods, fourth-seeded Framingham State University pulled out the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Women's Soccer Championship with a 4-3 decision in penalty kicks against second-seeded University of New England on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Maple St. Field.

With the slim advantage entering the fifth round of shootout attempts, Rams goalkeeper Sara Sullivan made her second stop in the series of kicks to seal the victory. She also denied UNE's first try and then stepped up to convert FSU's initial penalty, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for her impact.

Framingham State (14-7-1) finished on top of a 16-7 margin in shots for the game, including 9-4 during the 1st half. Big Blue's Brielle Robinson posted five of her six saves in the frame on the way to her fourth solo shutout of the season.

The Nor'easters close out the year at 13-4-3 -- the most wins in a campaign (by one over 2010 and 2011) during the five-year tenure of head coach Heather Davis.

Both sides had near misses in double overtime. In the 101st minute, the Rams' Brini Varetimos put a shot off the post and Marisa Parent sent the ensuing rebound just wide. UNE's Kaitlyn Hall took a lengthy shot in the 108th minute which sailed fractionally high.

After Sullivan in the shootout, Isabela DeSouza, Parent, and Claryssa Cunniff found the back of the net for Framingham State. The Nor'easters' second, third, and fourth attempts were scored by Taylor Littlefield, Tori Field, and Kayla Hamel.
