Three alums off to New England Basketball HOF

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Three members of the University of New England Athletics Hall of Fame will be enshrined in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame on June 22. The dinner and ceremony, which will be held at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., will begin at 6 p.m.

Jay Corey (UNE '90), Paul Peterson (Westbrook College '94) and Derek Vogel (Westbrook College '96) will be among those in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2013.

Corey was a prominent member of the UNE men's basketball team from 1986 to 1990. He is the program's career leader in assists (943), steals (576) and fourth in points scored (1,757). Corey was a multiple NAIA District 5 (New England) all-district selection and still holds the single-season record for assists (294) and steals (198).

The cornerstone of the Westbrook College men's basketball program, Peterson scored 2,550 points during his career – a figure that places him second in school history and fourth all-time in Maine collegiate basketball. He also is the program's career leader in rebounds with 1,586. Peterson was Mayflower Conference Player of the Year in 1993 and 1994 and a two-time NAIA all-American.

Vogel finished his career with a total of 3,050 points, a Maine college record that still stands today. A two-time Mayflower Conference Player of the Year, Vogel held the NAIA career scoring record for several years.  He made a splash on the New England basketball scene in 1993 when he was selected NAIA District Rookie of the Year, and went on to earn four all-conference selections.  He holds the men's basketball program's record for points in a single game with 45.
