INDIANAPOLIS -- The University of New England is ranked 6th in the Northeast Region by the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship Committee, as announced early Wednesday evening. The release of the rankings includes games through February 5.
The NCAA has regional advisory committees that rank the top six teams from eight geographic areas, with the exception of the Northeast, which puts together a list of 10 teams out of the 81 in the region. The NCAA will release a second and third set of rankings in the coming weeks. A fourth and final batch, although not made available to the public, will serve as one of the tools used in selecting teams for participation in the NCAA Championship.
Big Blue (18-4) has notched victories in 11 of its last 12 contests -- after last night's win over Eastern Nazarene -- and sits atop the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) standings by two games with three remaining. UNE (13-2) leads Western New England, Salve Regina, and Endicott, which all hold CCC ledgers of 11-4. The Nor'easters still have dates left on the schedule against the Golden Bears and Gulls, as well as Nichols College.
