BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jason Mulligan has resigned as the men's head basketball coach at the University of New England. UNE Interim Director of Athletics Curt Smyth made the official announcement on Tuesday (Feb. 28).
Mulligan served as head coach at UNE for five seasons, leading the Nor'easters to three postseason appearances during that time. UNE captured The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Championship in 2009, ending that season with 24 victories – including 19 in a row – to tie a school record for wins in a season. The Nor'easters posted an overall record of 24-5 and 12-1 conference record while cracking the NCAA regional rankings and earning a berth into the NCAA Championship for the first time in the history of the program. Mulligan was voted the TCCC Coach of the Year by his peers.
In Mulligan's first season (2007-08), the Nor'easters won 15 games, a 10-win turnaround from the previous year, which was tied for the best turnaround in NCAA III. UNE concluded its season with an impressive run during the ECAC Championship. After upsetting top-seeded Emerson College in the opening round, the eighth-seeded Nor'easters made it to the title game before falling to Newbury College.
During Mulligan's time at UNE, the Nor'easters posted a 36-34 record in conference play.
"We thank Jason for his five years of service to UNE, and wish him well in the future." said Smyth.
A national search to fill the position will begin immediately.
