TCCC volleyball coaches choose UNE to finish fifth

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- In The Commonwealth Coast Conference preseason poll released this afternoon by TCCC Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye, the University of New England volleyball team is ranked fifth out of 11 institutions.

Endicott College (111 points) edged out defending TCCC champion Roger Williams University (108) for the top spot. Each team received four first-place votes, while Western New England College garnered three first-place nods on its way to 105 total points. Colby-Sawyer College (90) holds down the fourth spot, while the Nor'easters collected 72 points to round out the top five.

The Nor'easters graduated two starters from last year's team that posted an 11-16 mark and qualified for the TCCC Championship. Senior middle hitter Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) returns to anchor a powerful front line. Edwards was chosen honorable mention all-conference in 2009 after registering a team-best 187 kills and placing second with 30 total blocks.

UNE opens play Sept. 3-4 at the University of Southern Maine Invitational. The Nor'easters are slated to take on the host Huskies Friday evening (Sept. 3) at 7 p.m.
