Meet Results
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Sophomore
Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) posted 63 points in three all-New England performances at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships to help the University of New England women's swimming team to 322 points and a tie for 10th place finish out of the 22 teams competing. The meet was held over three days at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center.
The Nor'easters, who are not able to compete in the diving events, finished 6th in just the swimming events.
Keene State College took the team title with 924 points, winning all five relay events and 12 of 18 individual races. Swimmer of the Meet Kaila Umbarger won all three of her individual events, and set new meet records in the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly. In all, the Owls registered five meet records.
Led by Anne Kaduboski's three wins, Bentley University finish in second as a team with a score of 802. Eastern Connecticut State University (709) rounded out the top three.
Umbarger's time of 23.79 was the only mark better than Wareham's in the 50 free event, as the UNE sophomore posted a new school record with a time of 24.48 to place second. Courtney Burdick '09 held the three-year-old record (24.93) entering the weekend, before Wareham nipped Burdick's mark in the event prelim (24.89) and then torched her own mark later in the final.
Already having qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 50 free two weeks ago, Wareham also managed to achieve ECAC standards with her 4th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.11) and third-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle (54.60).
In addition, both times were good for new school bests. Burdick's 54.95 from 2007 was bettered in the 100 free, and Wareham edged the 1:02.16 set last year in the 100 fly by Allie Wagner '09. Like in the 50 free, Wareham broke the previous 100 fly mark in the prelim, and then proceeded to replace her own time in the final.
The 400-yard medley relay team of first-year
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.), sophomore
Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.), Wareham, and first-year
Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine) also clocked a team-best 4:16.89 to place 6th in the event. The previous mark was set by last year's squad at the NEISDA Championships.
The same four UNE swimmers combined to take 8th in the 200 medley relay, and sophomore
Hannah Lipomi (Enfield, Conn.) worked with Hanley, Arsenault, and Wareham to place 7th in the 200 free relay.
Shea put forth a solid effort individually during the weekend, coming away with a 7th (200 breaststroke), 9th (100 breaststroke), and 10th (200 IM) in her three solo races.
Senior
Alison Leopard (Bloomington, Ill.) held her own in the distance freestyle events, earning 9th in the 1650-yard and 10th in the 1000-yard.
Hanley also garnered a top 10 finish as an individual, placing 9th in the 100 IM.
