UNE lacrosse announces team captains for 2010

Mike Sagaert, Mike Woods, Matt Anderson and Nate Porter have been voted captains for the 2010 season

BIDDEFORD, Maine – At the University of New England men's lacrosse alumni game this past Saturday (Sept. 26), head coach Jon Hunt announced senior Mike Sagaert, junior Mike Woods, and sophomores Matt Anderson and Nate Porter will serve as team captains for the 2010 season, as voted by the team.

Sagaert, a senior long-stick midfielder from Colorado Springs Colo., has been a mainstay on the UNE defense for three years. A three-year starter, Sagaert has led the Nor'easters each season in ground balls (245 in three seasons). He is a psychobiology major.

A junior midfielder from Kittery Point, Maine, Woods has quickly become an integral part of the UNE program. A transfer from St. Anselm College, he was fifth on the team in scoring (14g, 8a) while starting 15 of 16 games in 2009. Woods is majoring in applied exercise science.

Anderson, a sophomore midfielder from St. Paul, Minn., has been a leader on and off the field for UNE since the day he arrived in Biddeford. Anderson appeared in all 16 games in 2009 as a defensive midfielder, registering one goal and two assists while picking up 24 ground balls. He has yet to declare a major.

Porter, a sophomore goalie from Cohasset, Mass., started 10 of the 13 games in which he played a year ago. Porter has shown he is a natural leader on and off the field. He is a marine biology major.

“We are very excited to have such a strong group of young men to lead us this year” said Hunt. “The future of UNE lacrosse is very bright in the hands of these four student-athletes. Our coaching staff and players feel they will help us reach our collective goals, and represent UNE lacrosse in a positive manner.”
