Huskies race to victory at UNE Invitational; 2nd for hosts

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross country team took four of the top five places en route to the team title at the University of New England Invitational Saturday morning at Rotary Park.

The Huskies' team score of 21 topped the University of New England in second place with a total of 44. Saint Joseph's College (105), UMaine Presque Isle (112), and Maine Maritime Academy (127) rounded out the top five. Lyndon State College had a score of 139, and both Thomas College and Unity College could not post a score.

USM junior Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) claimed the individual title, completing the 5,000 meter course in a time of 20:09. Senior Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt.) and first-year Jennie Foley (Bangor, Maine) finished 2nd and 3rd for the Huskies.

First-year Jen Sweigert (Mohrsville, Pa.) led a pack of UNE runners in places six through nine, crossing the finish line in 21:04. Classmate Kim Martins (Newburyport, Mass.) took seventh 22 seconds later, junior Mary Fehlner (Keene Valley, N.Y.) finished eighth, and first-year Kaitlin Noyes (Brewer, Maine) came in ninth.

Other Nor'easters that factored in the scoring were first-years Lindsay Forrette (Chicopee, Mass.) and Morgan Burke (Newburgh, Mass.), and sophomore Jess Partlow (Hopkinton, N.H.)

UNE races next on September 26 at the Elms College Invitational.
