BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters scored three times in the second period to open up a close game on their way to a 5-2 victory over the University of Maine club team in college men's ice hockey action Friday evening at Biddeford Arena.
Despite holding a 19-7 advantage in shots on goal, the Nor'easters led just 1-0 after one period. First-year
Nate Frechette (Winslow, Maine) scored his fifth goal for the only offensive output.
The Nor'easters outscored the Black Bears 3-1 in the second frame to take control. After UNE first-year
Todd Bartlett (Dover, N.H.) and UMaine's Carey Gustanski exchanged goals,
David Woods (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and
Ted Fabian (Oakland, Maine) scored back-to-back to give the Nor'easters a 4-1 lead after two periods.
Chris Bolton (Dover, N.H.) scored at 5:07 of the third to give UNE a four-goal cushion before Mike Maffei countered two minutes later for the Black Bears.
The Nor'easters controlled play for much of the evening, holding a 54-31 lead in shots on goal. UNE sophomore goaltender
Bryan MacLure (Winchendon, Mass.) made 29 saves to register the win, while
George Jenkins (Natick, Mass.) was credited with a pair of assists to help fuel the offense.
UNE (13-4-1) -- winners of seven straight -- wraps up its season next Friday (Feb. 20) when it heads to Boston to take on the BU club team at 6:00 p.m.
