Biggs to retire from post of women's head soccer coach

Doug Biggs led UNE to 180 wins and three championships during his 20-year career

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After a long and successful career as Women's Head Soccer Coach at the University of England, Doug Biggs will be retiring at the close of the year. UNE Director of Athletics Kim Allen made the formal announcement this morning (Nov. 20).

Biggs guided the women's soccer program for 20 seasons, compiling a career mark of 180-130-17 and leading UNE to three postseason championships. He received several coach-of-the-year awards, including most recently in 2008, when he was voted The Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year by his peers.

In 1994, Biggs coached UNE to a program-record 19 wins and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 5 championship.

Allen indicated a search for Biggs' successor will begin immediately.

"Doug has had a very successful and distinguished coaching career," Allen said. "With 30 wins over the past two seasons, he is leaving our program in outstanding shape. Whomever we hire to replace Doug will be well-positioned to continue the tradition of success Doug has built here at UNE."

In addition to serving as Women's Head Soccer Coach, Biggs held numerous other positions while at UNE, including Men's Head Soccer Coach, Men's Head Lacrosse Coach and Sports Information Director.
