First-year Karina Scavo's 76th-minute goal proved to be the difference against the Beacons, putting UNE up 2-0 late in the second half
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After defeating sixth-seeded UMass Boston Wednesday night by a score of 3-1, the University of New England women's soccer team has claimed a spot in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship.
The Nor'easters, selected into the championship field for the second year-in-a-row, chalked up their 15th win against just three losses with a solid performance versus the Beacons. UNE controlled play throughout against UMB, amassing a 24-9 edge in shots by games' end.
Now the tournament's third seed will travel to No. 2 Keene State College (15-6-2) for a 1 p.m. re-match of last year's ECAC semifinal which was won by UNE in overtime, 2-1. The Owls had the No. 1 seed in 2008, and held a commanding 21-9 (12-4 SOG) advantage in shots during the match, but goalkeeper
Leigh Engel (11 saves) and forward
Sarah Richardson (OT game-winner) kept the fourth-seeded Nor'easters alive to play again. UNE met Brandeis University in the championship game, coming out on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision.
On the other side of this year's bracket, the top-seeded Judges (10-6-3) and No. 4 Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (15-5) will meet at noon in Saturday's other semifinal. Both won first round games by a 3-0 margin, over Castleton State College and Emmanuel College, respectively.
