UNE field hockey to host ECAC Championship

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- By virtue of its win over Southern Maine yesterday and Plymouth State's upset victory over top-seeded Keene State, the University of New England field hockey team will play host to the semifinal round and championship game of the 2009 ECAC Division III New England Championship.

The second-seeded Nor'easters raced out to a 4-0 halftime lead en route to a 5-2 win over No. 7 University of Southern Maine yesterday. UNE will put its program-best 14-3 record on the line  at 11 a.m.  Saturday versus the only The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent to defeat the Nor'easters during the regular season -- Endicott College. The Gulls defeated UNE, 2-1. back on Sept. 26. No. 6 Endicott (12-8) advanced Wednesday with a 2-0 shutout of Framingham State College.

In the top half of the bracket, No. 4 WPI will take on No. 8 Plymouth State. WPI rallied to top New England College, 3-1, while Plymouth State knocked off the championship's top seed with a 3-2 win. The Engineers and Panthers, who meet in Saturday's second contest at 2 p.m. did not face one another during the regular season.
