BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Ali Trafton was selected The Commonwealth Coast Conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, and was one of five University of New England players who were recognized in a release of the year's major award recipients and all-conference teams. TCCC Sports Information Coordinator Matt Pettinicchi made the announcement this afternoon.
In addition to her selection as TCCC Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, she joined junior
Kate Pemberton as a first team all-conference selection. Senior
Leigh Engel was voted all-TCCC second team, while sophomore
Maggie Mahoney and first-year
Karina Scavo earned honorable mention all-conference accolades.
Trafton, a senior midfielder from Manchester, Maine, carries a 3.86 cumulative grade point average as an applied exercise major. She is a member of the TCCC Academic All-Conference Team and has been a Dean's List student each semester. On the playing field, Trafton finished the regular season as the Nor'easters co-leader in goals (6), assists (6), and total points (18).
A repeat first team all-conference selection, Pemberton anchored a UNE defense that surrendered just 11 goals in 16 games. The Scarborough, Maine native also chipped in two goals and one assist.
Engel, a senior goalkeeper from Richmondville, N.Y., started 15 of 16 games, posting a 13-2 record and 0.72 goals against average. She registered five individual shutouts and paired with sophomore
Jess Woodworth for four others.
Last season's TCCC co-Rookie of the Year, Mahoney tallied six goals and six assists during the regular season to tie Trafton for the team lead with 18 total points. The product of Newburyport, Mass., achieved all-conference status for the second consecutive season.
Scavo, a first-year midfielder from Mt. Sinai, N.Y., notched five goals and dished out three assists during the Nor'easters' 14-2 regular season. She led UNE with three game-winning goals.
Thanks to their 11-2 TCCC mark, the Nor'easters garnered the No. 2 seed for the TCCC Championship and will host Wentworth Institute of Technology tomorrow (Oct. 31) at 1 p.m.
