Ryan Tarr's on the field presence and leadership played a significant role in UNE's 10-win regular season
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- In The Commonwealth Coast Conference awards voting released late today by TCCC Sports Information Coordinator Matt Pettinicchi, University of New England senior Ryan Tarr was selected Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, sophomore Kiel Hiller was named first team all-conference, and senior John-Michael Cascio was voted honorable mention.
Tarr, a back from Hermon, Maine, has been an integral part of the Nor'easters' success, both on and off the playing field. A medical biology/medical sciences major, Tarr boasts a 3.75 cumulative grade point average. He is president of UNE's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Utility Officer for the TCCC's SAAC. The two-year captain was one of five players to start all 17 of the Nor'easters' games.
Hiller, a forward from Galloway, N.J., scored a team-best eight goals to go with four assists during the regular season. Two of his eight tallies were game-winners. Hiller is a repeat selection after being named second team all-conference in 2008.
Cascio, an outside back and captain from Topsfield, Mass., had a breakout season for the Nor'easters. Starting all 17 games, he played a major role in UNE's defense allowing just 1.28 goals per match. Offensively, Cascio added one goal and three assists.
UNE won 10 games during the regular season, its highest win output since 1997. The eighth-seeded Nor'easters will travel to top-seeded Western New England College tomorrow (Oct. 31) for a TCCC Championship quarterfinal-round game.
