More than 50 student-athletes at the University of New England helped clean up the streets of Biddeford, Maine on November 4, 2006.

Organized by Student Athletic Advisory Committee staff coordinator Julie Redman and head men's lacrosse coach Jon Hunt, the group picked up trash, raked leaves and performed other routine clean-up duties in, and around, the Main Street area of the Southern Maine city.

Hunt contacted ""Heart of Biddeford" director Rachael Weyand with the idea.  Biddeford Public Works Department supplied rakes, gloves, trash bags and wheel barrows, and UNE purchased (then donated) additional rakes.

University of New England director of athletics Kim Allen feels community service is an integral part of the student-athlete experience.

"It is imperative our student-athletes have a sense of being able to give back to the community," said Allen.  "Service to others is a skill that will be important as they continue to grow in their adult lives."
