November 6, 2007

The University of New England swim team participated in the second annual Ted Mullin “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power event on November 6, 2007.   The Nor'easters joined forces with more than 50 other collegiate and high school swim programs to raise awareness and support for the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma.

This event was created in memory of Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team member Edward “Ted” Mullin who died in September 2006 from synovial cell sarcoma.

Synovial cell sarcoma is a cancer that causes tumors of the soft tissues, bones, and joints. 55% of the 12,000 cases each year hit ages 15-29, making it the fifth most common cancer in this age group, yet it seems that there is little public knowledge of the disease. Even more troubling is the fact that the treatment rate is not improving in the adolescent and young adult population of which it effects the most.

The Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research will use the funds raised to fund the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology led by Dr. John Cunningham. This network of clinicians and physician-scientists is working to increase the accuracy of diagnosis, treatment, and care for all those who have sarcoma.
